Agreement between the WINERED team and the observers

WINERED is a PI instrument available at the Magellan 6.5-m telescope (Clay, NASE). It is open to use by observers who have access to the Magellan telescope on a shared risk basis, but an agreement should be made between the observers (or Proposal PIs) and the WINERED instrument team. This page explains the agreement to be made, although a different arrangement may be done upon mutual agreements in advance.

The WINERED team hopes the WINERED working as a visitor instrument at the LCO to produce a lot of fruitful data for various proposals. It is crucial to have good collaborations between Proposal PIs and the WINERED team for optimal observation planning, smooth operations and eventually producing good scientific results. Here is the basic idea we suggest on the collaborations, and it is required that each Porposal PI and the WINERED team reach to an agreement on the points described here.

I. Access—time exchange: Exchange between the instrument access and observation time:

  1. Proposals by general users are handled by relevant TACs, and the night allocation is exclusively done by the TACs.
  2. The WINERED team will use 20% of the time allocated in each semester as the payment for giving use of the instrument and the service described below (II). The TAC determines which nights to be used for this exchange.

II. What the WINERED team is expected to do:

  1. (before proposals are submitted) Provide the general information necessary for planning observations and the Exposure Time Calculator (ETC) available on the web.
  2. (before the observing run(s)) Upon request, check the feasibility of the proposed observations and get the instrument ready for the proposed observations.
  3. (during the observing run(s)) Give instructions on how to make the observations with WINERED, especially to those who are not familiar with the operation of WINERED. Have at least one technical personnel who monitors the performance of the WINERED observation during the observing run and tries to fix technical troubles when necessary (work during each particular night is not guaranteed).

III. What a Proposal PI (and collaborators) is expected to do:

  1. (before proposals are submitted) Check the WINERED ability in our papers (Ikeda et al. 2022, Otsubo et al. 2024) or on the web. If necessary, contact the WINERED team for clarifying technical justification of the observations planned.
  2. (when the proposal is awarded the time) Start to communicate with the WINERED team via e-mail to discuss the observations. In particular, the following needs to be decided well before the allocated night(s). (i) Which of the three modes (WIDE, HIRES-Y, and HIRES-J) will be used. (ii) Who will operate the WINERED, in person at the LCO or remotely.
  3. Arrange your travel or remote observations with the LCO. Your target list needs to be uploaded to the telescope system.
  4. Observations may have to be stopped under some circumstances, e.g., for the weather or the instrumental reasons. Follow the decision by the LCO staff or the WINERED team at the site in such a case.

IV. Publication of results based on the WINERED data at Magellan:

  1. The WINERED team does not request co-authorship of papers published based on the WINERED data collected for the proposals unless otherwise arranged or we actually contribute to scientific investigations and writing the papers.
  2. The WINERED team requests the Proposal PIs to notify the publication of a paper (refereed or non-refereed) based on the WINERED data. The paper should cite the instrument paper (Ikeda et al. 2022) and include the following acknowledgement:
This paper includes the WINERED data gathered with the 6.5 meter Magellan Telescope located at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile.
