Information on the WINERED with Magellan for 2023A
Observing Slot(s)
As the first semester making the WINERED (risk-shared) open to the Magellan users, we are thinking to have one observing run around early June. To be more specific, we suggest to consider observations within the following two weeks.

WINERED Status
- We expect the WINERED is fully operational in the 2023A semester.
- We made the first light with the WIDE mode of the WINERED
at the Magellan telescope (Clay) in 2022 September.
The WINERED co-works with the telescope for introducing and tracking objects.
- The WIDE spectra look good at the first glance. We are investigating some details including the following points.
- Slit Viewer - The SV give reasonable images, allowing observers to introduce targets. Wavelength, limiting magnitudes?
- Spectral resolution - The calibration data taken in the laboratory, the spectral resolution in each observing mode (WIDE, HIRES-Y, HIRES-J) is as good as expected.
- PSF - The stellar image on the spectrograph detector looks nice, giving the FWHM as small as 0.6 arcsec within the slit in the space direction.
- Sensitivity - We have confirmed the sensitivity is almost as high as the expectation with the ETC; at least we confirmed that the signals are 70 per cent of what were expected in good conditions. We would need more data to confirm the sensitivity better. On the faintest end, we have detected the signal (with S/N about a few) from an object as faint as J=16.5 mag although the weather condition was moderate.
- Spectral quality - What was the highest S/N among the spectra taken in September?
